These arise from activities that we do not manage directly, including emissions from employee commuting (where data was available), transmissions and distribution of electricity, the manufacture of construction materials for developments (known as embodied emissions, see page 100) and waste. Aldar’s total carbon footprint in 2020, including Scope 1, 2 and partially Scope 3, was 2,008,254 tCO2e14. 66% of our total Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions come from electricity and 29% from cooling. Although we have considerably less influence over Scope 3 emissions, at a group level, these represent around 84% of Aldar’s carbon footprint. A key challenge for us over the next year will be to monitor our Scope 3 emissions so we can better understand their relevance and our level of influence on them. By 2025, we will achieve 20% reductions in our asset portfolio energy intensity and associated greenhouse gas emissions intensity, against our 2019 baseline Total absolute energy consumption14 Residential and Small Retail Retail Hospitality and Leisure Commercial Education Developments Scope 3 emissions calculated for the first time, representing 84% of Aldar’s footprint Energy use is the largest contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which is why driving efficiencies across our portfolio and establishing a renewable energy supply is of the utmost importance. Our support of the UAE’s GHG and Clean Energy Goals, together with the development of our Carbon Neutral Action Plan, will be vital in helping us achieve our ambitious 2025 energy intensity reduction targets. In 2020, the total absolute energy consumption of Aldar was 950,091 MWh14, with our Residential and Retail portfolio responsible for approximately 70%. Electricity and cooling represent the largest proportion.
